Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe has won a contract with i3 Group to support the latter in its delivery of a Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network called Fibrecity to cities across the UK.
Under the agreement, Fujitsu will take responsibility for laying the infrastructure that will connect up to 1mn UK properties to the super-fast network within the next four years.
Fijuitsu expects to start rolling out the fibre optic network to Dundee's 68,000 homes within one month. Within two years, every home and business across the city is expected to have access to broadband speeds of up to 100 Mbps, with boosts of up to 1 Gbps.
"Our Fibrecity network is the UK's largest Fibre-to-the-Home initiative and we're delighted to have signed Fujitsu to support us with the roll out of our technology," said i3 Group's CEO, Elfed Thomas. "Fujitsu brings considerable depth of resources and experience and this is a significant milestone towards our aim of rolling out true fibre to the home to over one million properties within four years."
Fibrecity has already started building a fibre network in Bournemouth, and announced last May that it plans to develop networks in Derby, Halton, Nottingham, Plymouth and York. Further cities under consideration for the project include Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol and Ipswich.
