SingTel expands IPTV footprint

Singaporean telco SingTel now has 1.2mn households within its IPTV-capable footprint, and is reportedly planning to double its customer installation capabilities from 400 to 800 per day in anticipation of the upcoming season of the English Premier League.

Speaking to news website Channel NewsAsia, the telco's CEO Allen Lew said that the company is planning to make "significant" investments to enhance its IPTV service, called 'mio TV', which currently has around 200,000 subscribers.

"The TV business will be the anchor product for our fixed network business in the years ahead," said Mr Lew.  "The ability to make mio TV a world class service is critical to us.  We are very confident that our learnings from World Cup, plus our discussions with other pay-TV providers elsewhere will put us in good stead to ensure that our network is resilient enough to cope with the loads that we will expect during the more popular [English Premier League] games."

In celebration of the imminent start of the new football season, SingTel is flying the trophies of the English Premier League, the FA Cup, the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League to Singapore this coming weekend to give Singaporean football fans the chance to see the trophies up close, at Comcentre and the Central Court of Vivocity.
