HKBN signs VOD deal

Hong Kong Broadband Network (HKBN), a subsidiary of City Telecom, has signed an agreement to add local video-on-demand service Anyplex to its IPTV service 'bbTV'.

The service will cost HK$ 20 (US$ 3) for one movie per month, with additional titles priced at less than HK$ 25.  The Anyplex service offers users an earlier release window than other pay-TV providers in the country, and contains films from the likes of Warner Brothers and Sony Pictures.

Upcoming films for the service include: Sherlock Holmes, Invictus, Valentine's Day, The Book of Eli, Legion, Death at a Funeral, The Bounty Hunter, The Blind Side, Free Willy: Escape From Pirate's Cove and Preacher's Kid.

Hong Kong Broadband Network has invested extensively in its fibre network, and recently passed 1mn subscribers for its fibre-based broadband services.  The operator had reached 157,000 customers for its IPTV service by the end of February 2010, down 13,000 from six months previously, with HKBN stating that it has started proactively collecting back set-top boxes from low-yielding customers for refurbishment and deployment to higher-yielding customers.
