Dubai-based firm ITSthe1 has unveiled a new application offering a highly interactive user interface for a 'point-and-click' remote control being demonstrated by Universal Electronics at this year's IBC show, taking place in Amsterdam later this month.

The new remote control, dubbed 'Dolphin', incorporates the wireless moving wand functionality of the Nintendo Wii controller whilst offering standard set-top box controls, making the TV screen a blank canvas for graphical user interface (GUI) designers to offer the point-and-click functionality of a PC mouse on the television.

"There's no looking back, now that we have this technology," said Tony Fernando, Managing Director of ITSthe1.  "The IPTV application we have designed for the high-end hospitality sector overcomes two barriers that almost all other systems have.  One is the lack of processor and memory power in standard STBs.  By using a small-form-factor PC as an STB, the power is unleashed to run any application. 

"The second barrier was navigation, which was limited to up-down-left-right before," he added.  "With the Dolphin remote allowing the user to control the on-screen cursor simply by pointing and clicking, there is virtually no limitation to what can be offered now."
