Dutch incumbent telco KPN reached 886,000 subscribers to its pay-TV services (delivered via IPTV and DTT) by the end of the second quarter of this year, up from 835,000 in March 2009.
The telco reached around 60,000 subscribers for its IPTV service 'Interactieve TV' by the end of June, compared to around 40,000 at the end of December 2008, with the remainder of its pay-TV customers subscribing to its DTT service 'Digitenne'. KPN already delivers triple-play services including high-definition IPTV over its burgeoning fibre infrastructure, and is scaling up its IPTV-over-copper operations, stating in its latest quarterly results that it plans to introduce HDTV to customers on its copper infrastructure in 2010.
The telco relates that the majority of its fibre-related CAPEX has already been committed, and is included in the 2009 and 2010 plans, with an emphasis remaining on regional roll-out rather than a comprehensive national roll-out. A decision on the mix of fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) and fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) is expected to be made by the end of this year, based on an evaluation of results from tests being conducted in ten cities (five for FTTC and five for FTTH).
KPN currently expects to pass around 850,000 homes with its fibre network by the end of this year, of which around 400,000 will be served with FTTH and around 450,000 will be served with FTTC.
Group revenues across all operations for the second quarter of this year reached €3.411bn, down 6.9% on a year-on-year basis, while EBITDA for the period reached €1.322bn, up 4.3% by the same comparison.
