What will the discussion involve?
Cable operators are facing up to the threat posed by IPTV and the continuing growth of satellite, and pondering the likely impact of over-the-top Internet video as broadband speeds improve. They are also looking ahead to increased triple-play penetration and improved economics for non-HFC expansion, with unbundled DSL giving them the opportunity to compete on a national scale, in some instances using digital terrestrial to provide the video part of the triple bundle, and always the possibility of video-over-DSL later. Faced with threat and opportunity in equal measure, the European cable industry is working hard to bring advanced and innovative services to market. Priorities (beyond launching/expanding digital tiers) include increasing volumes of HDTV and HD on-demand, much faster broadband, and more standard-definition VOD and television-on-demand. Looking further ahead, provision of mobile phone services (quad-play), flexible home networking and on-screen convergence of telecoms/entertainments will all be important.
