Tandberg TV: Next Generation Drivers for IPTV Content Delivery

Eric Cooney, President and CEO of TANDBERG Television, will take part in a super panel at IPTV Asia entitled ‘The Content Delivery Revolution’. Alongside senior players from the content and telco worlds, Cooney will discuss how IPTV operators can meet the competitive needs for delivering TV services such as TV on-demand and HDTV to an increasingly sophisticated and ‘digital savvy’ consumer.

"As the competition between cable operators, satellite broadcasters and telephone operators increases, there is mounting demand for IPTV delivery systems that enable telcos to exploit the potential of their networks. Differentiated services attract and retain subscribers and the killer applications in this heightening battle include more content and channel choice, HDTV and Video on Demand/PVR," says Cooney.

The past decade of TV has been about delivering to the consumer - a sit-back experience for the consumer and a push feed for the operator/service provider. In the next five years we will see dramatic growth and major changes in the world of TV and digital entertainment, as well as significant shifts in the way that content is consumed, monetized and delivered. The operator/consumer relationship will move from delivering to the consumer to delivering for the consumer - meeting changing needs in an on-demand, personalized world.

Cooney believes that the next five years will see a major shift in how media is consumed, delivered and monetized. New delivery methods such as IPTV are creating new opportunities for content owners and platform operators, as are enhanced service features such as HD, on-demand and mobile TV. Time shifted viewing is having a significant impact on the way entertainment, information and advertising are seen by the consumer and this change in consumption will have a direct impact on the way that content is delivered to the consumer. A common challenge facing operators and broadcasters is the task of packing as much consumer-grabbing video entertainment and information as possible into limited bandwidth. What’s more, the need to build today’s offerings on non-proprietary, open standards is key if operators, broadcasters and content owners want to ensure they are not locked into technology that is expensive to scale and adapt.

"If telephone companies are to profit from TV services they need a whole new generation of IPTV delivery technologies for VoD content creation and distribution, dynamic advertising insertion and bandwidth management for IPTV and HDTV," adds Cooney.

To hear how those delivery challenges can be addressed, see this panel at The IPTV Asia Forum in Hong Kong, November 28, 2005, http://www.iptv-asia.net
