Page 1 of 3 blueyonder tv: Consumer Feedback on TV Delivered Over Broadband The feedback from the blueyonder TV beta test has allowed the exploration of consumer requirements and expectations from a film or TV service over the internet. Although not a ‘pure’ IPTV service, the response from consumers reveals some key findings about how consumers participate in, and respond to, video content delivered over broadband onto a PC.
About blueyonder tv The cable company’s trial service provides broadband internet users with free, high-quality TV content, via four channels which play out like traditional TV channels.
Aggregating content from providers such as Flextech Television, high.tv and The Horror Channel, blueyonder tv streams a mix of entertainment, factual, lifestyle and sport-based programming around the clock.
Interview with Richard Garner Head of blueyonder Content Services Telewest Broadband
What was the idea behind developing blueyonder tv? The blueyonder tv service exists to complement our standard digital TV service and Teleport, our new TV-on-demand service. The original idea for blueyonder tv developed from listening to our customer feedback We were hearing that customers were really interested to explore the opportunity of accessing video over the internet. We were also keen to be able to demonstrate to our broadband customers just what is possible when you start to use higher amounts of bandwidth. The service launched last November and we have had extremely good feedback from our consumers. The project is still currently in a beta test phase, and we are currently considering the possibilities of where we may take the service next. Can you give an idea of the type of usage the service has had? We have had 25,000 users on the site on a monthly basis, and 10 million minutes of content have been viewed so far. All the content is currently completely free and available to all. The one restriction on the service is that the video content is only available to broadband users in the UK. We have found that those who were a part of the early adopter broadband market have also been early adopters of this service. blueyonder tv is being used by viewers as an alternative TV service. When consumers can’t find programming that interests them on conventional TV, or others are involved with a show they aren’t interested in, they can check out what is happening at blueyonder. We offer a lot of niche content, so this means that our programming has now started attract those users who can’t access this type of content on TV because of the limitations of a linear broadcast.
