Telecom Italia trials fibre-to-the-home services
November 24, 2008 - Telecom Italia is trialling the delivery of fixed-line services including IPTV over its new fibre-to-the-home network, according to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, quoting Luca Tomassini, Head of Business Innovation and Marketing Strategy for the telco.
"We are already trialling, and will be ready to offer in 2009, at least in some big cities, the solution Alicefibra," said Mr. Tomassini. "With Alicefibra, users can have up to 100 megabits of bandwidth. Users, according to their needs, can choose the desired speed (and the related subscription) up to a maximum of 100 megabits precisely."
The executive also indicates that the increase in network capacity will not only ensure the smooth delivery of IPTV, but allow the company to offer new value-added services to subscribers.
Telecom Italia passed 218,000 IPTV subscribers at the end of the third quarter of this year, an increase of 138,000 from the end of 2007, and is reportedly targeting 300,000 by the end of 2008.
