Telefónica launches Imagenio HD
November 24, 2008 - Telefónica has launched a new high-definition service for its IPTV service 'Imagenio', available to those IPTV subscribers which are connected to its new fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network, which recently gained regulatory approval from the Telecommunications Market Commission (CMT).
All subscribers which have signed for a Trío Futura 10 or 30 Mbps connection are receiving an HD-capable set-top box, and the new Imagenio HD service currently offers the channel AXN in high-definition (produced by Sony Pictures and featuring television series and films). Telefónica reportedly plans to gradually increase the number of high-definition channels avaialble, starting with addition of Canal+ in the near future.
The telco was reportedly delivering triple-play services over the new
FTTH network to 54,000 clients in Madrid and Barcelona in the
pre-commercial period previous to CMT approval. Telefónica recently reported that it had 589,551 Spanish subscribers for Imagenio by the end of the third quarter of this year, adding 12,993 customers in the three month period.
