Hong Kong Broadband Network reaches 156k IPTV subs in Q3
November 18, 2008 - Hong Kong Broadband Network (HKBN), a subsidiary of City Telecom, has reported that it reached 156,000 IPTV subscribers at the end of the third quarter of this year, an increase of 20,000 over the previous six months.
The company reports that the growth was due to its bundling service strategy as well as the launch of a dual-mode High Definition Terrestrial TV receiver and IPTV set-top box to all customers in Hong Kong during the year. HKBN also reported that it became the largest alternative residential broadband provider in the territory during the third quarter of the period, overtaking a local cable TV operator to reach 316,000 subscribers by the end of August, with the addition of 37,000 customers in the six months to August.
“Over time, we envision that the open Internet will be the preferred source of multi-media content for entertainment, and this will drive demand for more and more bandwidth in our daily lives,” said William Yeung, CEO of City Telecom group. “As the largest alternative residential Internet service provider in Hong Kong providing unmatched mass scale ultra high speed broadband Internet services, we expect this competitive edge will lead to steady improvement growth and profitability outlook.”
