This paper discusses Personal Video Recorder (PVR) service, an emerging interactive television technology that lets consumers realize true on-demand entertainment through their televisions. PVR dramatically changes how users watch television by making all programs available on-demand with full VCR-like control. Faced with competition from satellite service providers offering PVR, cable operators are considering how to best offer PVR service. Operators could deploy PVR with new and enhanced set-tops, or they could use video on demand (VOD) servers located in cable headends. The latter approach is becoming known as server-side PVR or network PVR. This paper analyzes set-top PVR and network PVR approaches, looks at the advantages and disadvantages of each, and proposes a number of implementations for cable operators to consider. |
