Chunghwa passes 500,000 Multimedia on Demand subscribers in Q2
August 29, 2008 - Taiwanese telco Chunghwa Telecom reached 508,000 subscribers for its "Multimedia on Demand" IPTV service in the second quarter of this year, adding 73,000 new subscriptions in the period.
The telco reported strong take-up prior to and during this year's Olympic Games, held in China earlier this month, with the number of views per household up 160% during the games compared to beforehand. Chunghwa Telecom saw its number of ADSL subscribers decrease by 126,000 during the quarter to reach 3.5mn, however this was offset by strong growth in Fibre to the Building (FTTB) additions, with 148,000 new FTTx connections during the second quarter of this year to reach a total of 800,000, bringing the total number of broadband subscribers to 4.3mn by the end of June.
Total consolidated revenue from all operations for the second quarter of this year increased 0.6% year-on-year to reach TWD 50bn (US$1.58bn), while net income rose 0.1% by the same comparison to reach TWD 12.5bn.
