Worldwide IPTV equipment market posts 30% growth in Q2, says Synergy
August 15, 2008 - The worldwide market for IPTV equipment grew 30.3% in the second quarter of this year relative to the same period of last year, according to a new report from Synergy Research Group, driven by upgrades to carrier networks, especially at the edge of the network, in order to handle a "surge" in subscriber and traffic growth.
The fastest-growing IPTV market segment was found to be core routers, which grew 37.9% year-on-year in the three months to June 30. Worldwide IPTV subscribers meanwhile are projected to increase "substantially" over the next two years and approach close to 40mn in 2010 according to the report, entitled 'Synergy Q2 2008 IPTV Market Share report'.
"The service providers that have been early adopters of IPTV have arrived at an inflection point that is no longer driven by market share gain but by profit," said Ray Mota, Chief Research Officer at Synergy Research Group, "The requirement to increase IPTV network efficiency has become vitally important, IPTV equipment manufacturers that realise this shift in perspective can tailor their strategies accordingly."
