Sumitomo Electric Networks selects Cavium processors for triple-play home gateways
July 17, 2008 - Sumitomo Electric Networks, a Japanese supplier of broadband access products, has selected an OCTEON CN5020 processor from US semiconductor firm Cavium Networks for use in its new flagship triple-play home gateways.
The new Sumitomo gateways are designed to work with fibre-to-the-x (FTTx) deployments and meet the performance and quality demands of major Japanese service providers, as well as process triple-play traffic with stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements and support IPv6 and PPPoE protocol processing.
"We benchmarked a number of solutions and the OCTEON CN5020 was clearly the best solution for us," said Tsuyoshi Kawano, President of Sumitomo Electric Networks. "Our product has to meet or exceed the highly demanding price, power and performance requirements needed for mass deployment of fibre-to-the-home broadband networks. Cavium's dual core processor enabled us to fulfill these requirements along with ease of programming and providing headroom for future deployment of additional services."
