China Telecom inaugurates IPTV lab in Shanghai

July 10, 2008 - China Telecom has opened an IPTV research and development lab at its Shanghai research facilities, according to reports in the local media.

The new lab will work to establish technological criteria for Chinese IPTV companies in line with international standards and offer testing and validation services to IPTV platform and terminal providers. China Telecom has operated IPTV trials in 17 Chinese cities since 2005 in collaboration with the Shanghai Media Group (SMG), offering services including live broadcast content, video on demand and information services.

The telco's IPTV subscriber base reached just under 1mn in May of this year, and the company aims to reach the 2mn mark by the end of 2008.
