Lithuania's Viginta orders Widevine Cypher
June 30, 2008 - Lithuanian multichannel television, telephone and Internet service provider Viginta has selected downloadable content protection from Widevine to secure content delivered over DTT, hybrid QAM (cable) and IPTV networks.
Widevine Cypher will be used to manage the delivery of broadcast and video on demand content over its multiple networks delivery systems, which include MMDS, fibre rich Metro Ethernet and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial networks, to a range of consumer devices. Widevine claims the deal to be the first time downloadable conditional access and DRM has been implemented in a one way DTT network.
"UAB Viginta originally chose Widevine Cypher for its IPTV deployment and was looking for ways to leverage that existing investment over all of its managed networks," said Paul Shmotolokha, Chairman of Viginta. "As Viginta acquires other operators, it inherits various networks and wants a single conditional access solution across these networks. When we looked into a downloadable security approach to solve this problem, we realised that in most cases the industry is pretty divided between encryption for one-way and two-way networks. Widevine has stepped up to the challenge and offers a unique ability to fit with whatever ecosystem we choose."
