Widevine Cypher connects pay-TV services to PC players
June 18, 2008 - Widevine has added an enhancement to its Cypher content protection solution that enables pay-TV operators to connect their services securely and directly to major PC players.
The enhancement converts MPEG2 transport streams on a PC so that they are recognisable by Adobe Flash, Apple QuickTime and RealNetworks RealPlayer. Pay-TV operators can thus deliver standard-definition and high-definition content to a PC without the need for special connectors, head-end equipment or custom PC player software.
“Initial attempts to expand in-home networks to PCs were limited by legacy conditional access systems and a lack of support for device native media players,” said Glenn Morten, CTO at Widevine. “The media transport proxy bundled with Widevine Cypher enables operators to gain significant reach in terms of device footprint using popular players running on most PC and mobile platforms in the world today.”
The Widevine Cypher PC client watermarks content as it decrypts, then monitors and responds to software and hardware tools used to illegally copy and distribute premium content, enabling operators to extend their licensing for PC delivery.
