China Telecom launches tender for over 500,000 IPTV set-top boxes
June 17, 2008 - China Telecom has launched a tender for 574,000 IPTV set-top boxes, with each provincial branch in the country handling its own acquisition process under a unified framework managed centrally.
The tender involves the procurement of 536,000 standard-definition set-top boxes and 38,000 high-definition set-top boxes, and all must be compliant with H.264 encoding. The potential bidders are reported to be those companies participating in the telco's IPTV 2.0 test process, designed to migrate China Telecom onto a more advanced IPTV platform. Only Guangdong province will not be ordering any units, as its IPTV platform is not scheduled to be upgraded to IPTV 2.0 this year.
China Telecom had around 280,000 IPTV subscribers at the end of last year, and the company aims to reach 2mn by the end of 2008.
