Two US midwestern telcos select Comtrend ADSL2+ bonded residential gateways
June 12, 2008 - US telcos Bayland Telephone and Rural Telephone, based in Wisconsin and Kansas respectively, have selected Comtrend's NexusLink ADSL2+ bonded residential gateways in order to enable the delivery of IPTV, including HD programming, and other services to their customers.
The gateways use bonded ADSL2+ technology, combining two or more copper pairs as a single connection to enable the delivery of up to 48Mbps download speeds without the need for extra infrastructure. "The NexusLink bonded ADSL2+ modem allows us to deploy mature HD MPEG2 IPTV to our customers," said Shane Broyles, Central Office Manager for Rural Telephone. "This saves us the significant expense of converting our content to MPEG4 and working through the challenges that this new technology presents to both our set top vendors and middleware provider. We can also provide IPTV and premium Internet access at longer distances using our existing copper plant."
Paul Hermsen, Broadband Manager for Bayland Telephone, added: "The NexusLink modem has enabled our rollout of HD content to our subscribers. It has maximised the bandwidth we can deliver on our existing infrastructure while keeping the installation clean and professional. Our HD deployment to this point simply wouldn't be possible without the NexusLink modem."
No information on subscriber numbers for the telcos' IPTV services was available at the time of publishing.
