Japan's IPTV Forum drafts technical specifications
June 11, 2008 - Japan's IPTV Forum, an organisation comprised of local telcos, broadcasters and device manufacturers, has drawn up draft specifications for Japanese IPTV services with the stated aim of standardising the industry.
The draft covers specifications for IPTV receivers, whether that be set-top boxes or integrated in a TV set, and covers broadcast services using IP multicast technology as well as video on demand services that deliver videos via streaming or downloads. The draft contains six sets of specifications, which are: "VOD specifications", "Download specifications" and "IP broadcast specifications", covering content delivery services, and "Broadcast link specifications", "Internet scope specifications" and "CDN scope specifications", which cover service measures. The draft also contains the regulatory proposal "Regulations for operating IP signal re-transmissions".
"Manufacturers can make their devices support either all of these six sets of specifications or part of them when developing receivers," said a spokesperson for the IPV Forum. Some areas have been left open to be decided upon by service operators, such as digital rights management.
The IPTV Forum was formed in October 2006, and its members plan to hand over the progress achieved thus far to a new organisation that will be launched to finalise the specifications.
