Colombia's ETB to launch IPTV in March 2009
June 10, 2008 - Colombian telco ETB plans to start tests of an IPTV service in November of this year and launch by March of next year, according to new company CEO Fernando Panesso.
Mr. Panesso, who took office last week, projects that the telco will invest COP87bn (US$51mn) in the roll-out of IPTV in Colombia, despite regulatory uncertainties. ETB does not have a pay-TV licence as required by the National Television Commission, but does have a licence to operate IPTV as a value-added service, as directed by the Colombian Communications Ministry. The launch is thought by some commentators in local media to be in response to preparations by other local operators to enter the TV market, such as Une and Telefonica.
The new CEO also revealed that ETB aims to reach a total of 800,000 broadband subscribers by 2012, compared to the current 300,000 customers.
