Swisscom offers VDSL customers Zattoo in improved quality
June 4, 2008 - Swiss telco Swisscom has formed an agreement with Internet TV firm Zattoo to offer the latter's service in improved quality to its VDSL subscribers.
20 channels on the Zattoo platform are being offered in improved quality (HiQ) free of charge to Swisscom's VDSL subscribers, out of a total available of over 70, with the service having already launched in beta version and to be further improved in the coming weeks and months. The service requires that users are already subscribing to Swisscom's "Bluewin TV" IPTV offering, of which there were a reported 64,000 customers at the end of the first quarter of this year.
German-language channels available in improved quality are SF1, SF2, SFinfo, ARD, ZDF, RTL, SAT1, PRO7, VOX and Eurosport; French-language channels available in improved quality are TSR1, TSR2, TF1, France 2, France 6 and M6; and Italian-language channels available with the improvements are TSI1, TSI2, RAI 1 and Canale 5.
While the service appears to be designed as complementary to Swisscom's Bluewin TV, this is an unusual move for an IPTV provider and whether it allows the telco to expand its services without adversely affecting its own TV offering remains to be seen.
