6mn UK consumers "not satisfied" with digital TV
May 29, 2008 - More than one in four UK customers of digital TV are not satisfied with their service, according to a new survey by uSwitch.com, with an estimated 6mn consumers in the country disappointed with the service they receive.
This is despite the nation collectively spending £4.2bn on digital TV services each year, with nearly nine out of ten homes having now gone digital in preparation for the imminent switchover from analogue transmissions. UK households were found to spend an average of £190 per year on digital television services, with Sky coming top for best overall satisfaction, as 76% of customers polled reported they are satisfied with the service overall, although the company was voted last for value for money, with 57% (or an estimated 3.6mn customers) of those polled dissatisfied with price, paying an average of £31.17 per month.
Virgin Media had the least proportion of satisfied customers, with 32% or more than 1.2mn subscribers not satisfied with the overall service. The provider did better on value for money however, with 66% of customers satisfied on price, spending an average of £16.70 per month. Freeview unsurprisingly (for a subscription-free platform) came top in terms of value for money, with 75% of respondents reporting that they are happy with value for money, deemed by those polled to be the most important factor when choosing a digital TV provider.
The survey covered customers of the country's top three digital TV providers - Freeview (with a 43% market share), Sky (with a 37% market share) and Virgin Media (with a 15% market share) - which together account for 95% of the country's digital TV market, estimated at 37mn TV sets. IPTV providers BT and Tiscali did not feature in the survey.
