Corbina Telecom to launch Mediaroom-powered IPTV service in Russia and CIS region
May 29, 2008 - VimpelCom-Communications (VimpelCom), a telecoms group with operations in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), has formed a strategic partnership with Microsoft to launch an IPTV service powered by Microsoft's Mediaroom platform via VimpelCom's subsidiary Corbina Telecom.
The service is to be launched in mid-2008 under the name of Corbina TV, and will reportedly be the first IPTV service powered by Mediaroom in Russia and the CIS region. At launch the service will include over 100 channels, including standard- and high-definition content, and over 1,000 on-demand titles, covering films, cartoons and TV series. Corbina TV will be delivered as part of a triple-play package to Corbina Telecom subscribers through purchase of a Motorola set-top box, with customers having the option of acquiring a unit with or without a 160 GB hard drive for digital video recording.
“Corbina Telecom’s fibre-optical network is reaching almost every apartment building in Moscow and many other Russian cities and is known for its speed and reliability, providing its users outstanding Internet service," said Dmitry Malov, Vice President of Corbina Telecom. "With the Microsoft Mediaroom solution, Corbina Telecom will also provide its users an outstanding TV service.”
Corbina Telecom operates its own fibre-to-the-building network in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other Russian cities, offering each apartment building Internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps. VimpelCom has operations in Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Georgia and Armenia, and serves a total of 51.7mn customers with voice and data services in these countries.
