Telefónica posts 64% increase in pay-TV subscribers worldwide for Q1
May 15, 2008 - Telefónica has posted a 64.4% increase in the number of pay-TV subscribers it serves worldwide for the first quarter of this year to reach 1.8mn, with operations up and running in Spain, the Czech Republic, Peru, Chile, Colombia and Brazil.
In Spain alone the company reached 554,045 customers for its “Imagenio” IPTV service, adding 42,958 subscribers during the first three months of this year. Telefónica added 221,825 customers for its retail broadband services in the period, bringing the total to 4.8mn, while the total number of subscribers for its Duo and Trio bundles reached 4.1mn.
Telefónica Latinoamérica reports that it now has over 1.2 million pay-TV subscribers in the region, with operations in Peru, Chile, Colombia and Brazil, compared to 700,148 customers in March 2007. Of this total, there are now 231,625 pay-TV subscribers in Chile, while Peru registered a 12.7% increase in revenues from TV services.
Telefónica O2 Czech Republic added 14,008 subscribers to its IPTV service in the first quarter of this year, reaching a total of 87,173, while the number of customers subscribing to a bundled product reached 122,605 by the end of last March.
The Telefónica group’s total revenues for the first three months of this year reached €13.896bn, a year-on-year increase of 1.1%, while net profit fell 0.1% to reach €767mn.
