Portugal Telecom opts for DS2 powerline technology
April 16, 2008 – Portugal Telecom has selected powerline networking technology from Spanish firm DS2 to deliver a remotely-managed, multi-channel high-definition IPTV service around subscriber homes.
Subscribers to Portugal Telecom’s “meo” service can install up to three set-top boxes around the house, and the service supports the simultaneous streaming of one HD channel and two SD channels. DS2 reports that over 60% of meo subscribers have opted for DS2’s 200 Mbps powerline product as their home networking solution.
“As service providers continue their efforts to provide advanced video, audio and data services, they need an easy way to deliver those services anywhere in their customers’ homes cost-effectively,” said Victor Dominguez, VP of Sales at DS2. “DS2’s UPA-compliant powerline technology provides the perfect solution to service providers that want a reliable solution today and that need guaranteed interoperability with next generation 400 Mbps powerline technology.”
Portugal Telecom reportedly aims to increase its subscriber base for meo by more than 340% this year.
