Televisa seeks Telefonicá alliance
March 28, 2008 – Televisa, a Mexican producer of Spanish-language content, has indicated that it is seeking a deal with Spanish telco Telefonicá to compete in the pay TV market, and specifically against Mexican telco Telmex, according to reports.
Televisa’s President, Emilio Azcárraga Jean, commented that the company “is looking for opportunities” in order to improve its position in the telecommunications market. “We don’t reject an alliance with Telefonicá to offer pay TV services as well as Internet access and telephony in Mexico.”
Local competitor Telmex reportedly plans to offer IPTV from next July, subject to acquisition of the relevant licence.
