Calcutta Telephones launches IPTV service, according to reports
February 4, 2008 – Calcutta Telephones has now launched its new IPTV service in the city, according to local reports.
Calcutta Telephones, a local division of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), launched the service with an initial 103 television channels. “From today we are launching our IPTV (triple-play) service on a commercial basis which will be available across the city where broadband is available,” said S K Chakravarty, Chief General Manager of Calcutta Telephones.
The telco reports that it has been increasing the number of telephone exchanges in the city to improve service quality and reduce fault rates, and has brought the average loop length down to 2km. “We pan another 50 new exchanges to reduce the loop length to 1.5km”, Mr. Chakravarty added.
Calcutta Telephones also said that it is investing a total of RS 700 crore (US$ 177.4mn) in its new services during 2007-2008.
