Brasil Telecom selects UTStarcom’s RollingStream solution for IPTV service
December 11, 2007 – UTStarcom has announced that its RollingStream end-to-end IPTV solution was chosen by Brasil Telecom for the latter’s “Videon” IPTV service, launched commercially in Brasilia last October.
The Videon service is at present purely a video on demand (VOD) service, with no broadcast element due to local regulatory restrictions. The service will be expanded to the south and midwest regions of Brazil in coming months, and the RollingStream solution reportedly has an additional capacity of 50,000 subscribers to support this planned expansion.
“As one of the largest broadband providers in Brazil, we see IPTV as an opportunity to use our extensive IP network to provide our customers with broadcast quality, on-demand entertainment services,” said Carlos Watanabe, Business Development Director for Brasil Telecom. “Utilising UTStarcom’s RollingStream, Brasil Telecom can now offer the best on-demand entertainment experience. The launch of a VOD IPTV service is a very important step in our commitment to offer our customers integrated and converged services, such as Video on Demand, pay TV, interactive services, broadband access, and fixed and mobile telephony.”
UTStarcom reports that it currently has over 600,000 live subscribers on its RollingStream IPTV solution globally, and a total deployed subscriber system capacity of over 1mn subscribers. The solution was chosen for commercial deployments in China with China Netcom and China Telecom, in India with Bharti Airtel and MTNL/Aksh, and in Japan with Softbank.
