ABI Research has issued its latest leaderboard for suppliers of Online Video Platforms (OVPs) and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), with US firms dominating the top three slots.
According to the latest research from Informa Telecoms & Media (publisher of IP&TV News), revenue generated from the sale of content delivery network (CDN) services will grow threefold in the five years to 2017 to reach US$ 4.63bn. This is on the back of a fivefold rise in global CDN traffic.
The worldwide pay-TV market will continue to grow this year despite a decline in North America as consumers migrate to over-the-top (OTT) services, according to a new report from ABI Research.
The 2012 CDN World Summit was one of the biggest yet, bringing together the customary mix of network operators, manufacturers, traditional CDNs, content owners and other industry players for three-days of presentations, panel discussions and, of course, networking.
A recent report by IHS Screen Digest predicts reveals that the costs of OTT will rise to uncompetitive levels when they need to be scaled up to broadcast volume levels: the reasoning being that traditional broadcasting is delivered via multicasting and that OTT is delivered via unicasting.
This year’s IBC event lacked a big, overarching theme, or new “wow” topic to get journalists, analysts and market-watchers foaming at the mouth. And that’s no bad thing. It’s the sign of a maturing industry, and as a result, the show retained a healthy focus on improving existing products and trying to get the big things – multiscreen, OTT, hybrid – right. Nevertheless, there was plenty on show that highlighted that the market remains miles away from anything resembling certainty.
