IP&TV News talks to Russell Stern, CEO of Solarflare…
IP&TV News: Tell us about Solarflare and what you’re able to bring to the connected entertainment ecosystem?
Russell Stern: Solarflare sees that the connected entertainment ecosystem is changing rapidly and increasingly requires higher networking capacity and throughput to deliver high quality multimedia content for on demand videos and live streaming. With our High Definition (HD) video on demand (VoD) we help companies in this ecosystem enhance the capacity of their existing CDN infrastructure and increase storage capacity.
Currently we work with RTL Nederland which is a trendsetting multimedia company with a leading position in the Dutch consumer and advertising market. We help the company achieve high quality multimedia content delivery by deploying Solarflare’s 40GbE’s networking technology.
What’s a major discussion point for Solarflare at the moment?
One big topic we see will be the public policy debate on net neutrality. With IP video being the fastest growing source of traffic on the internet today, service providers all want to add value to their transport networks and complement, if not actually deliver, the best video services.
What’s the history of Solarflare’s involvement in this ecosystem?
In addition to RTL, we are in POCs with several leading media and entertainment companies. Video has become a critical competent in the space, whether it is streaming video delivered over mobile packet networks of VoD delivered over the top or to a set top box.
With net neutrality debates, we see this ecosystem becoming increasingly relevant. We predict in the next year the rise of both service providers and content delivery network providers investing in sensors, instrumentation, precision time and analytics to build these new SLA management systems.
You’ll be appearing at Black Hat USA. Where do you see the most opportunity in the security space, and the most challenges for practitioners?
We always say that we work to defend at the server, which is a rich target environment for attacks and the critical endpoint in all data centers. By focusing on the network server, we use active components such as BRO to dynamically insert rules to stop bad traffic that enters and leaves the server. As a result, firms can be more proactive protecting the server and defend both internal and external threats, resulting in greater and more efficient network security.
The main challenge that practitioners face is the balance between protection and performance. The traditional firewalls and security applications are not sufficient enough for today’s sophisticated DDoS attack. Multiple layers of defense are required in order to capture and block unauthorized access. Just as important is the speed in which the network server can mitigate these malicious attacks before they penetrate the server operating system or disrupt services. They need to find a way for both components to work together and not compromise one another.
