Viacom is to begin the international roll-out of another of its major US cable networks with the launch of Spike in the UK in the spring of next year.

The TV channel, which reaches almost 100 million households in the US and ranks regularly amongst the most watched basic cable networks, will launch on the Freeview digital terrestrial TV (DTT) platform early next year, making it instantly available free-to-air in an additional 11M UK TV homes.

Simultaneously, VIMN will also strengthen Channel 5’s flanker channels on Freeview, adding additional Viacom content to the schedules of 5USA and 5.

“Today our UK networks spend over £300 million a year in programming,” comments Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman. “Close to half of that is on original UK programming across our networks. That topline number will continue to grow and the UK commissioned part of it will grow faster. We think that’s the way to go in today’s world where our viewers want more fresh, original content.”
