Viacom to buy Channel 5

US media group Viacom, which owns channels including MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, is set to announce the purchase of Channel 5 for as much as £450m.

The deal, which would falls short of Channel 5 owner Richard Desmond’s original valuation of around£700, would enable Viacom to make a big move into free-to-air television in the UK.

Confirmation of the sale is expected later today.
