PayPal service for connected TV viewers

In what could prove to be a very significant development for the future of OTT (and connected TV in general), the online payment service provider PayPal has developed a new payment system for HbbTV, the pan-European initiative aimed at harmonising the broadcast and broadband delivery of entertainment to the end consumer through connected TVs and set-top boxes.

The system, which can be used for video-on-demand, pay-TV and TV shopping among others, allows viewers to make payments directly through the remote control of an HbbTV-enabled receiver or TV. The new service was developed with Munich TV software developers Gofresh. Naturally, the customer must have an existing Paypal account.
