Aereo : WSJ calculates NY subscribers

In an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal concerning the perennially controversial TV streaming service Aereo (the actual article itself is focussed on Aereo’s daunting electricity bills), the paper offers an educated estimate–based on a simple stroll through Aereo’s Brooklyn facility–of there being 90,000-to-135,00 subscribers in the company’s longest-standing market.

As pointed out in Gigoam, Aereo have remained so quiet concerning their popularity that the estimate represents our first insight into how quickly the service is actually spreading. Considering that Aereo is currently expanding to other US cities, and remembering yesterday’s reports that Time Warner Cable were threatening to mimic or even purchase Aereo, we can expect these ad hoc figures to be of very keenly scrutinised indeed.
