18 million Apple TV and Roku customers in the US and Canada alone can enjoy Sky News courtesy of a new app by 1 Mainstream, now also available on the NOW TV IP streaming box in the UK, where 1 Mainstream is in partnership with regional industry leaders British Sky Broadcasting.
“We’re always keen to use innovative new technologies to help us reach more people with our award-winning content,” explains Sky’s Director of Corporate Business Development Emma Lloyd. “Working with 1 Mainstream on Apple TV and Roku has meant that we can create bespoke apps for these platforms more quickly than ever before, enabling us to reach even more homes and better monetize our content internationally.”
Besides Sky, 1 Mainstream’s customers encompass twenty media, content and entertainment companies, with supported platforms including iPad, Kindle Fire, Google TV, Apple TV and more.
1 Mainstream was launched by a group of Apple, Roku and Tivo veterans in 2012, the first software-as-a-service platform to provide app creation automation, streaming, ad serving and billing for Internet TV. “1 Mainstream is a great example of an enterprise platform designed and built by a consumer team. I am glad to see the platform receiving strong market validation and support from Sky, and leading platforms like Apple TV.” says Jason Krikorian, venture capitalist at DCM Ventures, an early backer of 1 Mainstream alongside Menlo Ventures and Sky itself.
Developed with the firm intention of fundamentally changing and improving the timely and expensive application development process, and of enhancing user experience more generally, 1 Mainstream offers an automated platform that allows content programmers, networks and distributors to focus on content and customers.
