China’s BesTV signs up exclusive EPL rights for six seasons

Shanghai-based IPTV operator BesTV has acquired the exclusive broadcast rights for the English Premier League from 2013 to 2018 in the Chinese mainland, purchasing them for an undisclosed sum from Super Sports Media Group.

Under the terms of the deal, BesTV will also pay US$ 1.85mn for a 14% stake in Beijing-based Sports Media Group, a sports marketing and communications company supported by joint investors IDG Capital and New Yadii Media.

BesTV has also signalled its intention to expand its business overseas, stating that its subsidiary BesTV International (Cayman) will invest US$ 35.15mn in BesTV International (Hongkong) for this purpose.

China is believed to have accounted for a fifth of the world’s 84mn IPTV subscribers by the end of 2012, according to US firm Pyramid Research, with growth in the country being driven by a rising base of broadband subscribers and the expansion of fibre networks.
