Immensely popular music streaming service Spotify has confirmed to IP&TV News that Dave Price, head of BBC iPlayer, will be joining as director of product next month.

Price is expected to head up the development of Spotify’s iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and web player apps, and will take up his new role in early July, reporting to Sten Garmark, VP of product management.

This is the second high-profile exit from the iPlayer team in recent months: Daniel Danker, director of programmes and on-demand at the BBC, left last March to join media discovery specialists Shazam (more details here).

Editor’s view: This is a big appointment for Spotify, and gives weight to growing rumours that the service is preparing to add video to its content lineup at some point in the future, and even invest in original content, as we reported last March.
