YouView boxes now in 400k British homes

YouView, the UK’s connected TV platform backed by the BBC and launched less than a year ago, has now reached nearly 400,00 homes, with telcos BT and TalkTalk accounting for the vast majority of them.

Despite enduring a difficult development, YouView CEO Richard Halton said that the platform is now off to a great start, adding that he and his team are delighted to have received such a positive response from customers.

Nearly two-thirds of YouView owners are using the boxes to access video-on-demand each week, according to Halton, with children’s programmes ‘Peppa Pig’ and ‘Mickey Mouse Club House’ proving the most popular.

Halton also revealed plans to launch IP-delivered broadcast channels on the platform this summer, but did not give specifics of which channels will be joining YouView, which already counts around 70 free-to-air channels from the UK’s major broadcasters.

TalkTalk revealed earlier this month that it had already signed up 150,000 YouView subscribers, with 12,000 news ones being added each week.
