Tom Mockridge has been picked as new CEO of UK cableco Virgin Media, taking over from Neil Berkett once its acquisition by Liberty Global is complete.

Mockridge has held a number of senior roles at News Corporation over the past two decades, including chief executive of Sky Italia, and most recently chief executive of News International.

He will report to a newly-formed operating committee which includes Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries, CTO Balan Nair, and Diederik Karsten, executive vice-president of European broadband operations.

Liberty Global offered US$ 23bn for Virgin Media last February, and the deal is expected to complete in June 2013.
