Du sees small TV gain

Du, one of the two main telcos in the United Arab Emirates, saw a small improvement in the number of subscribers for its IPTV service during the first quarter of this year to reach 124,000, up 6% annually.

Broadband additions fared slightly better, rising 11% annually in the first quarter of 2013 to reach 145,000.

Recent research by Informa Telecoms & Media (publisher of IP&TV News) finds that IPTV has now made a “significant” impact on the country’s TV market, thanks to rollouts by both Du and Etisalat.

However, the popularity of free-to-air DTH services, as well as delays to the liberalisation of the UAE’s broadband market, mean that the two telcos may struggle to significantly increase their IPTV bases.
