Singaporean telco StarHub has confirmed plans to launch a new IPTV service called ‘StarHub TV on Fibre’ on March 18th, delivered over the country’s Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (NGNBN).
The service will initially be available only to commercial customers such as offices, restaurants and pubs, and will be positioned as an alternative to the country’s DTT platform, offering more channels, Facebook profile integration, unique user account logins, an aggregated user rating system, and informative apps such as the Singapore Exchange, Yahoo! News and Weather.
The new service will offer over 100 channels – triple the number available on DTT – with extra ones including favourites across kids, entertainment, education and sports genres like Cartoon Network, HISTORY, NBA TV; and high-definition options such as FOX HD, FOX SPORTS PLUS (HD), Discovery HD World, National Geographic Channel HD and Travel Channel HD.
“While DTTV has served our commercial customers well, we have capitalised on the NGNBN roll-out to provide an even better service to this segment of customers,” said Ms Lin Shu Fen, StarHub’s Vice President of Home Solutions. “StarHub TV on Fibre marks an important milestone in our pay-TV business.”
The dominant IPTV provider in Singapore is undoubtedly SingTel, which launched its ‘mio TV’ service back in 2007 and has since clocked up over 400,000 subscribers, according to its latest results filing.
