Viaplay extends OTT service to PS3 consoles

Scandinavian over-the-top (OTT) video streaming service Viaplay is now available on Sony PlayStation 3 gaming consoles across the region, thanks to an app developed by Swedish firm Accedo.

Viaplay’s complete offering from a large number of local and international content providers will be made available to console users in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland with a PlayStationPlus subscription.

The Viaplay application was developed, tested, and launched for multiple platforms by Accedo, including Smart TVs from Samsung, LG, Philips and Panasonic, as well as for PlayStation 3.

Viaplay (part of Modern Times Group) was launched in May 2007 and now offers a strong lineup of linear and on-demand content including films, TV shows and live sports.

The company does however have a major new rival to contend with – Netflix. Also sizing up the local OTT market is HBO, which plans to launch an online video service there imminently.

IHS Screen Digest currently predicts that there will be around 1.6mn installed PS3 devices in Scandinavia by the end of this year.
