Orange allies with Akamai on CDNs

France Telecom/Orange has formed a strategic alliance with US firm Akamai to provide better Content Delivery Network (CDN) services to its business customers.

Upon deployment, the operator’s enterprise division Orange Business Services will market solutions featuring technology from Akamai’s Aura Network Solutions to customers, starting in France.

Orange particularly expects the partnership to benefit its customers in the media and e-commerce markets, by providing cutting-edge video solutions and web-acceleration services.

Akamai and Orange have also formed an innovation steering committee to jointly identify and explore emerging areas of CDN innovation in order to bring new solutions to market.

Akamai was recently ranked by Informa Telecoms & Media (publisher of IP&TV News) as the leading CDN services provider worldwide, both in terms of revenues and number of network servers, but faces growing competition, specialisation and consolidation threats.
