In a bid to keep up with local demand for BBC programming, Telekom Malaysia has launched a fourth channel from the august broadcaster on its IPTV service ‘Hypp TV’.
BBC Entertainment joins BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle and CBeebies on the Hypp TV platform, and offers the very best of comedy, drama and light entertainment from the BBC and other UK production houses.
Telekom Malaysia’s IPTV service is delivered over the country’s new High Speed Broadband (HSBB) network, but has thus far been hindered by lack of access to top content controlled by its competitor Astro. Local reports estimate that Hypp TV had reached 130,000 subscribers by late 2011.
Given local demand for top-quality English-language programming, Malaysia appears to be a viable target for the BBC’s Global iPlayer initiatives, now headed up by Michael Fleshman, SVP of Consumer Digital Technology at BBC Worldwide.
For its part, DTH operator Astro Malaysia formed a decade-long IPTV partnership with broadband operator Maxis earlier this month, and launched an over-the-top service called Astro On-The-Go last June, initially offering 11 TV channels, catch-up TV, VOD titles and live events to its existing customers.
