  • Mike is writing a white paper right now on this very topic – we’ll be posting it on IP&TV News over the next few days, keep an eye out for it!

jamiebeach on Live Q&A: Mike Johns, Digital Mind State

  • Mike tells me that he has been in contact with Snoop Dogg’s camp over the weekend discussing what extra options artists have to license a branded video player, negotiate rates with ad agencies and gain additional traction, create new behaviour…

  • I think we’re going to have to wrap this up now folks…

jamiebeach on Live Q&A: Mike Johns, Digital Mind State

  • Mike, I have one question for you – what potential do you see for hip hop stars to move into online video production themselves? Do you think it is better for them to pass over management of these channels to specialists?

jamiebeach on Live Q&A: Mike Johns, Digital Mind State

    •  @jamiebeach Some are actually doing this, they moved from two turnable, a mic, social media to now owning high end HD cameras. The missing link however and again I’ve mentioned this is having there own video players.  To answer the 2nd part of your question YES. Control is key. Some of the bigger name artist like Snoop Dogg are doing just that.

iamdigitalnews on Live Q&A: Mike Johns, Digital Mind State

      •  @iamdigitalnews But Snopp Dogg can control it because he’s top dog! What about less well-known artists?

jamiebeach on Live Q&A: Mike Johns, Digital Mind State

        •  @jamiebeach the key for emerging artist as well indie artist is to have a buzz. I’ve been preaching for some time now “Attention is the new currency!” It starts with gaining eyeballs to them climb your way to the top.  YouTube is a start- artist are posting pre/post rolls to send traffic to there respective websites. Ultimately its about gaining traction before anything else

  • Mike, What’s your opinion about the monetization models arounf these VOD music platforms?

Laurence Coldicott on Live Q&A: Mike Johns, Digital Mind State

    •  @Laurence Coldicott What artist are now and the dawn of beginning to understand is go beyond YT and own get into purchasing video players direct. This way for advertisers they are able to ultimately demand a higher CPM. Example:
      http://www.ssense.com/video/iggy-azalea-diplo-fki-i-think-she-ready/-

iamdigitalnews on Live Q&A: Mike Johns, Digital Mind State

      •  @iamdigitalnews Do you think this is the start of a revolution? Or are we taking babysteps at the moment?

Laurence Coldicott on Live Q&A: Mike Johns, Digital Mind State

        •  @Laurence Coldicott This is a very good question. We are at the beginning stages. In so many ways I feel personally artist are ‘hoodwinked’ while they’ve been so focused on branding and connecting with artist using the free platforms like a YT and Vevo- there not making the bucks, just crumbs. Sad only the bigger artist are making some money using those platforms while YT and others alike are racking in the bucks.

iamdigitalnews on Live Q&A: Mike Johns, Digital Mind State

        •  @iamdigitalnews  @Laurence Coldicott But what other options do they have?

jamiebeach on Live Q&A: Mike Johns, Digital Mind State

        •  @Laurence Coldicott services like what UK base Wirewax is bringing to the table I’m confident can revolution the game and how artist market themselves.

iamdigitalnews on Live Q&A: Mike Johns, Digital Mind State

        •  @jamiebeach  @Laurence Coldicott How did Jay-Z say it, “# don’t lie!” until you have the #’s then you can’t even really think about monetizing. Attention is the new currency, that has to be an artist #1 focus, once you break the 1 million mark you can begin talking! ITS A COLD GAME

iamdigitalnews on Live Q&A: Mike Johns, Digital Mind State

    •
Example: Im on a crusade urging artist to invest beyond beats & rhymes and HD cameras and to go further by investing in video players. The Platform, Kultura and UK base Wirewax are the way to go. Based upon fan base size, artist can work with ad agencies etc, have video player re-skinned and multiple revenue streams opps. Currently the cpms offered for YT and Vevo is low. By taking matters in their own hand they can control content as well create a new behavior- THATS POWER!

  • What new trends are you seeing in this area? What are you most excited about?

netiqette on Live Q&A: Mike Johns, Digital Mind State

  • Is hip hop at the cutting edge? I’d think urban UK styles, IDM etc. would be on the frontline.
