The new boxes are expected to mark the beginning of a new era for the cableco, thanks to their ability to combine digital TV services with personal content and IP-delivered content and services for viewing on every screen in the home.

UPC Netherland will be first to deploy the new boxes this autumn, followed by Switzerland’s UPC Cablecom, then Germany’s Unitymedia Kabel in the first quarter of next year.

The Samsung-built gateways have been in development for at least 18 months, and will use the Snowflake user interface from UK company NDS (recently acquired by Cisco).

Liberty Global serves around 8mn subscribers across Europe with digital cable TV services, which account for a little under half of its total TV base.
