HBO Nordic, the recently-announced joint venture between Time Warner HBO and Persifal International, has awarded a five-year contract to Swedish firm Ericsson to manage the playout and media management services for HBO Nordic’s TV content.
The partners behind the joint venture revealed last week that they will be launching an over-the-top video service mid-October 2012, offering both subscription and transactional video-on-demand services.
HBO Nordic will also be launching a premium, 24-hour, advertising-free channel in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, to be carried on both its new OTT platform and also via local distribution partners.
Ericsson unsurprisingly has a strong customer base for its managed services in the Nordic countries: it manages playout services in the Nordic region for Canal+, now C more Entertainment, which was acquired by TV4 group in 2008. In 2009, Ericsson announced that it operates the playout services of the TV4 Group in Sweden.
In 2012, Ericsson acquired Technicolor’s Broadcast Services division, a worldwide technology leader in the media and entertainment sector. The acquisition brought approximately 900 highly skilled professionals and playout operations located in France, UK and the Netherlands serving several leading broadcasters.
Ericsson has officially announced more than 100 contracts for managed services with telecom operators worldwide since 2002, together serving more than 900mn subscribers worldwide.
