IBC: Belgacom deploys Wyplay software on set-tops

Belgian telco Belgacom has just updated its installed base of TV set-top boxes with new software from French firm Wyplay, giving subscribers new features and services such as cross-media recommendations and an improved high-def graphical interface.

The cross-media (TV, VOD and EPG) recommendation functionality is expected to assist the the end-user in the discovery and consumption of highly personalised content, while the new user interface is promised to be faster and more responsive. The new software platform will also assemble and launch many new upcoming innovations for Belgacom.

After winning the Belgacom contract back in early 2011, Wyplay developed a complete solution from the driver layer up to and including the graphic user interface, introducing all these innovations for Belgacom’s new TV STB, but also for its installed base of set-top boxes.

Belgacom recently revealed that it had reached 1.301mn subscribers for its managed IPTV service ‘Belgacom TV’ by the end of the second quarter of this year, having added 48,000 subscribers in the three month period

The telco also launched a major TV Everywhere service last month, enabling subscribers to watch over 30 channels of linear TV both at home and on the go, on a PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone.
